What is Blended Family?

LGBTQ couples may find themselves in blended families when either partner has a children from a previous relationship.

There are no legal protections in Singapore for the non biological partner in this situation. Co-parenting agreements are not legally binding and legal guardianship does not apply as second parent adoption is not available for unmarried couples.

While this may seem daunting, it is possible for both partners to put into place protections such as living wills and power of attorney. However, keep in mind that any children in such families will be subject to the ordinary guardianship succession unless clearly specified in the biological parent’s will.
